1- Work in the vineyard: APRIL, pest and disease control.

This month is very important for preventive treatments. The health in our vineyard depends a lot on how we control pests and diseases at this time.

Pests to watch:

Castañeta, gray worms, weevils

Although they are secondary pests in the vineyard, we must be attentive to the possible sources that we can observe and act on them.

The recommended product is CLORPIRIFOS GR, at a dose of 4-5 grams / plant. It is a granular insecticide that is distributed at the base around the plant.

Wood diseases:

Excoriosis (Phomopsis viticola)

If symptoms were observed during pruning or sprouting, it is preferable to carry out a sprouting treatment. The products to be treated will be:

  • POLYRAM DF ………… 150-200 gr.
  • MANCOFIT WP… .. …… 250-400 gr.

2- Milded in vineyard

The two diseases that most affect the vineyard are mildew and powdery mildew.

In this month, preventive treatments for these diseases are usually started.

They are two diseases that develop in specific conditions of temperature and humidity, so we must observe the weather and apply the treatment as necessary in each wine-growing area.

Mildew fungus control strategy

In flowering-fruit setting it is a very critical moment so it is advisable to treat. In the other states we could wait until we observe the first symptoms of primary contamination. There are some mnemonic rules such as 20-20-20: 20mm of precipitation, temperature 20ºC for a period greater than 20h. These are the ideal conditions for the development of mildew. Observing the weather and detecting these conditions must be addressed.

The products used are of three types: systemic, penetrating and contact.

Use of systemic products: From the possible first contaminations to the pea-size grain, use systemic products.

Use of penetrants: from the pea-sized grain to the beginning of the veraison we will apply penetrating products.

Use of contact fungicides: from the start of veraison until harvesting.

Areas with high humidity

In these areas we will use systemic fungicides against mildew since the risk of spreading the disease is much higher.

Some commercial products to use are:

  • METALAXIL-Mancozeb
  • CABRIO TOP
  • DIMETOMORF 15% AGROFIT

Low humidity areas

MANCOFIT WP + PK VITAL

3- Powdery mildew

Oídio Strategy: Key moments to deal with:

  1. When the clusters become visible with shoot lengths between 5-10 cm.
  2. At the beginning of flowering.
  3. With pea-chickpea size grains.
  4. At the beginning of veraison (5-10% of grains changing color).

In the case of strong attacks of powdery mildew, we recommend treating with:

  • COLLIS …………………………………………  40 cc./hl.
  • CABRIO TOP ……………………………..  200 gr./hl.
  • MICLOBUTANIL …………………………..  50 cc./hl.

Sulfur in dusting has its effectiveness in its favor (as long as the attacks are not too strong), it does not generate resistance, the lower cost, its stopping effects on mites and favors fruit setting if it is used in flowering.

The alternatives to follow are:

  • 98.5% micronized sulfur in sprinkling.
  • Spray-wettable sulfur.
