1- Vine varieties: Conditioning factors in the choice of variety.

Although in today’s viticulture there are many  vine varieties  that may be interesting to us, or at least susceptible to being tested in our vineyard, there are certain limitations when choosing the variety, some of which do not depend on our criteria.

2- Choice of variety according to administrative limitation.

Regulatory-Administrative:

Many appellations of origin or autonomous communities limit the varieties of vine that we can plant, if we want to enter within the seal offered by products with a controlled designation of origin.

In these cases, we must adhere to the standards already established by the DO. Normally DOs usually have authorized varieties and recommended varieties.

3- Choice of the vine variety according to economic criteria.

Production targets

Economic:

Market study, objectives of our company, type of product, marketing … all this is nothing more than conditioning of the vine varieties, where for your choice, we must know, the type of wine we want, market trends …. .

As for the type of wine , the main thing is to choose between production and quality.

Market studies will lead us to follow the general trend to take advantage of the economic benefits it generates, or on the contrary to propose a more original and unique product, in a market niche.

4- Choice of the variety according to weather and soil science.

Agroclimática:

Obviously it is a very important and limiting conditioner on certain occasions.

Soil and weather conditions are what they are, and we cannot change them.

The rootstocks and grafted grape varieties have characteristics that are not suitable for all soils or climates, or that will not produce the desired yields under those circumstances. This will limit us in the choice of the variety for our terroir.
