Biodynamic preparations in biodynamic viticulture.

In biodynamic viticulture, as in everything, there are different levels of dedication. The most purist biodynamic winegrowers carry out all their tasks to the letter and according to astral calendars in which the positions of the planets and the cycles of the moon have an influence on the vegetative cycles and therefore on the wine.

The Earth is immersed in the solar system.  According to the astral calendar, there are times and appropriate moments, to pay, to prune, to harvest and, in the end, also for the wine tasting, which will be more intense if it is done at the right time.

In biodynamic viticulture, the work in the vineyard is governed by this and the biodynamic farmers carry out the work according to the appropriate dates.

Compounds or preparations in biodynamic viticulture:

Biodynamic viticulture preparations are the answer that this type of viticulture offers us to try to avoid that both pests and diseases are also integrated into the system and exert their pressure on the vine plants in a more gentle way.

The preparations should ideally be made from the components of the environment itself. That way they will work properly, integrating and balancing the ecosystem.

The calendars of Maria Thun.

María Thun, with more than 40 years of research under her belt, has produced the “Sowing Calendar”. Cosmic rhythms influence the way plants grow, and they also affect meteorological phenomena. In his book ” Constellations and Biological-Dynamic Agriculture “, he explains various angular combinations of the planets, the moon and the sun, with respect to the Earth and how the climate and living beings behave under their influence.

The cosmic clock and biodynamic viticulture.

It is a useful and easy-to-use tool, with which we can know the position of the planets at all times. In this way, biodynamic farmers can know the cosmic rhythms, in a simple and graphic way.

Biodynamic preparations in biodynamic viticulture.

It is about 8 preparations, no more, that are numbered from 500 to 508. In theory they influence the dynamics of plant growth.

Below is a brief description of each of them, the active ingredient it contains, its preparation and the effect it produces on plants.

Biodynamic viticulture preparations. Prepared 500: Prepared of Boñiga.

This humus contains a very rich bacterial flora of active colonies per gram of humus, which gives rise to a great variety of enzymes that act as a soil correction element.

It favors microbial activity and the formation of humus, improves the absorption and retention of water from the soil.

Regulates the pH of the soil.

For the vegetal cover it stimulates the germination of the seeds, the growth of roots and their development. Increases the development of legumes and the formation of their nodes.

When and how is the preparation 500 applied?

In green manures it is used at the time of sowing and after its crushing, avoiding the risk of suffocation of the soil. For the vineyard planting: spray on the ground at the time of planting. Also spray in the bud stage. In autumn, spray just after the harvest. Early sprays can be hypersensitive to frost.

Biodynamic viticulture preparations. Preparation 501: Preparation of Silica.

Silicon oxide. Quartz or Quartzite.

Manage the qualities of light.

Promotes and orders plant metabolism.

It acts in polarity with the preparation 500.

When and how is the 501 preparation applied?

Spray the dynamized product as a nebula with a very fine drop before or after fertilization. Apply about 15 to 20 days before the harvest, it advances the maturation, takes on more flavor and more sugars. To help the fruit ripen, apply in the afternoon. Do not dynamize or spray during the passage of the Sun through its zenith.

Biodynamic viticulture preparations. Preparation 502: Yarrow Preparation.

Archetype of Venus.

In the compost pile, it activates the sulfur and potassium processes, facilitates composting and strengthens the fungifugal preparations.

Structuring of carbon molecules.

Sulfur (Catalyst for chemical processes related to solar energy) in combination with Potassium (Catalyst in the assimilation and polymerization of sugar into starch or cellulose).

ACTIVE PRINCIPLE:  Contains terpenoids, flavonoids and caffeic acid as an antioxidant that reduces the substances produced by some Aspergillus fungi (aflatoxins and mycotoxins).

Phytotherapy, what does it do in plants? : Resistance to parasites. The cold extract of Yarrow can be used to reinforce the preparation 508.

Biodynamic viticulture preparations. CHAMOMILE PREPARATION 503.

Matricaria chamomilla.

Mercury archetype.

In the compost pile it activates the Nitrogen processes.

It works in sulfur (Catalyst of chemical processes related to solar energy) in union with calcium (agglomerate of mineral particles).

It contains sesquiterpenes such as Alpha-bisabolol acid in its flower. They are antimicrobial compounds that act like Phytoalexin that, after bacterial or fungal infections, help limit the spread of the pathogen. In the earth, calcium is a structuring agent.

Biodynamic viticulture preparations. NETTLE PREPARATION 504.

Urtica dioica.

Archetype of Mars.

In the compost pile it activates the iron processes.

The preparation establishes order in the compost and soil processes; these become “reasonable” and favors the decomposition of organic matter.

ACTIVE PRINCIPLE:  Growth stimulant, contains cytokinins, auxins and gibbelerins; plant growth regulating hormones. It contains inorganic nitrates that plants convert back to nitrogenous organic compounds such as amino acids.

Phytotherapy, what does it do in plants?

Its infusion acts as an insect repellent (aphids and mites). The application of its fermented extract improves the absorption of the nutrients sulfur, iron and calcium. Its action is both vegetative and root level. Stimulates the growth of vegetables. Strengthens the defenses of plants, protecting them from diseases and the invasion of insects. Improves chlorophyll function. Preventive of chlorosis of the leaves and mineral deficiencies. In the soil, it improves the structure and removes excess iron and nitrogen. Fortifies and stimulates the microbial flora of the soil and vegetation. Fungal effect by adding its roots to a fermentation of nettle.

In the plant, the application of a maceration of 12 to 24 hours drives away the aphids, while the maceration of several days favors the assimilation if it is diluted properly from 15 to 20%.

Period of application of the preparation 504:

Strengthens the immune defenses for new plantations if the roots are soaked for about 30 minutes in pure nettle extract.

To reinforce the action of the 508 preparation add 5 to 10% of fermented nettle extract.

Biodynamic viticulture preparations. OAK PREPARATION 505.

Quercus robur bark.

Archetype of Venus.

In the compost pile it activates the calcium processes.

ACTIVE PRINCIPLE:  Oak bark contains calcium used to protect against fungal growth (75% of its ash is in the form of calcium oxide) and on the other hand, tannic acid that has an insect-repellent effect.

Phytotherapy, what does it do in plants?  Stops fungal growth.

Biodynamic viticulture preparations. DANDELION PREPARATION 506.

Taraxacum officinalis.

Jupiter archetype.

In the compost heap it activates the processes of silica and potassium and enters into reciprocal action to silica and potassium. Regulates the silica necessary for cultivation.

ACTIVE PRINCIPLE:  Salicinic acid, potassium and ethylene.

Phytotherapy, what does it do in plants?  In fermented extract it is a stimulant for the earth and vegetation.

Preparados biodynamic viticulture. LONDON 507.

Valeriana officinalis.

Archetype of Saturn.

In the compost pile it activates the phosphorous processes and participates in the nitrogen balance.

ACTIVE PRINCIPLE:  It contains isovaleric acid, it is a metabolite of the amino acid leucine, it is used for the formation of sterols that fulfill regulatory, structural and hormonal functions.

Caloric plant, the juice from a lactic acid fermentation is used. It favors the earthworms.

Phytotherapy, what does it do in plants?

Wound healing after a hailstorm. Protects from frost during flowering and formation. Helps increase growth hormone production. To protect from frost from mid-February to the end of April; Beginning of October, end of November.

The preparation 500 can be reinforced by applying a small amount of the 507 of valerian 10 ‘before finishing the dynamization; activates heat processes.

Biodynamic viticulture preparations. HORSE TAIL PREPARATION 508.

Equisetum arvense

It favors the structure of the crop.

Helps stop fungal growth.

It contains a saponin toxic to fungi called “Equisetonin”; a preventive antifungal. And silicic acid used as a growth tonic.

One of the most effective fungifuges used in organic farming. Some insect-repellent action against aphids and spider mites is even recognized.

Silica slows the growth of fungi when applying the fermented extract.

PHYTOTHERAPY:  It has to be used as a preventive and repeatedly to maintain control of Mildew, Powdery Mildew and Botritis sp.

APPLICATION PERIOD:  In spring and in midsummer for the vineyard, it is advisable to use a Table of the daily percentage of mildew development (Goidanich Table). In autumn until November, It is sprayed on the plants and the ground. It works beneficially when administered two days before the full moon.

This preparation is about a combination of Biodynamic preparations.

To make it, we will be literally removing cow manure for an hour , we will bury it with the biodynamic preparations and in a matter of a few months we will have a compost with humus with which to fertilize the soil. With its application in our vineyard we will receive the new life cycle of the growth of the young roots and the new sprouting of the buds this year.

While we remove it, we must dig a hole that will be made of wood to fill it with manure and where we will add the Biodynamic preparations that will reinforce it during the months of its composting.

This prepared when it is finished apart from having multiple qualities, it will also help us to fine-tune the soil where you want to make a new planting. Humus participates in the structure of organic matter and the retention of water in the soil.
